Orange Duck Travels, that’s us: Maarten and Diana. In the past few years we really enjoyed travelling, living and working abroad. Diana’s job as flight attendant with KLM was a perfect stepping stone: the world was a lot smaller than we thought. It only takes one flight to step in a totally different world, with its own customs, smells and behaviors.
Ahold and Unilever took us for longer periods to Prague and Kuala Lumpur. We really enjoyed discovering the two cities and cultures together! ‘Together’ had an extra meaning in Malaysia: by then Milou and IJtse had announced themselves and much to the grandparents’ regret we went there with the four of us. It was a very exciting time: 6-month-old IJtse did not understand it yet, but how do you prepare a two-year-old (Milou) for relocation to ‘Kuuwala Bumbu’? Travel books for toddlers did not exist: pictures of tigers, elephants and orangutans unfortunately (or luckily) did not fully cover it.
It soon became clear we were not the only ones looking for this: friends going on vacation, business trips or relocating just as we did looked for toddler friendly travel books as well. Our concept was born: cheerfully drawn read-aloud books to discover a country together with your child. Fun for preparation and fun as a souvenir!
In our search for an illustrator we came across the birth announcement cards of Steph. Her fresh, bright style immediately fired our imagination and we quickly contacted her. Coincidence or not: she also lived several years abroad and was immediately excited about the idea. After ‘The orange duck explores the Netherlands and France’ we started with enthusiasm on the Great Britain edition: we hope that many more will follow!
